Myths and Mandalas
Nikki Parmenter
"I take my inspiration from a variety of multi-cultural sources
which are rich and complex.
I am intrigued by the symbolism invented by different races and
societies and the way in which objects, natural phenomena, birds
and animals are given magical qualities or powers."
Nikki Parmenter explores the documentation of rituals, religious
events and myths from
ancient and modern civilisations all over the world. Her work draws
the
common threads of her research into a rich and complex imagery,
creating highly decorative artworks based on the ancient structure
of the mandala.
The mandala, traditionally an aid to meditation, is made up of a
symmetrical system of circles and squares. One of the ancient artforms
of Tibet, they are highly decorative and rich in pattern and colour.
For Nikki Parmenter, the mandala is a thought-focus, providing an
opportunity to immerse herself in the rich cultural identities of
many different people.
"In a world where many people enjoy the quick fix of manufactured
passive entertainment
and designer labelled consumerism, I feel that it is important to
remain aware of the cultural heritage which underpins every society. It
is a subject which holds an endless fascination."
