‘Still’
is an exhibition which explores ideas about stillness and repetition.
The work in its variety of forms examines states of being.
As human beings we crave stability, yet the experience of being alive
is such that we are never still. The stages in our lives reflect the constant
process of change,
our experiences, our identities, our understanding of life, are always in flux,
ever changing,
still evolving, never still.
‘Still’ brings together three artists whose work is strongly influenced
by the pattern, repetition and
calligraphy of Islamic art.
Bashir
Makhoul’s art is at once personal and political. He works
with a variety of media and new technologies to explore ideas about identity
and belonging.
Fakhriya Al-Yahyai works with paint and fabric on canvas, discovering
repeated patterns
and symmetry inspired by the Star of Islam.
Mohammed Al-Amri’s three-dimensional forms have evolved
from new juxtapositions
of the Arabic alphabet.
