Art and design key stage 3 - statutory for Year 7 pupils in September 2008
In art, craft and design, pupils explore visual, tactile and other sensory experiences to communicate ideas and meanings. They work with traditional and new media, developing confidence, competence, imagination and creativity. They learn to appreciate and value images and artefacts across times and cultures, and to understand the contexts in which they were made. In art, craft and design, pupils reflect critically on their own and other people’s work, judging quality, value and meaning. They learn to think and act as artists, craftspeople and designers, working creatively and intelligently. They develop an appreciation of art, craft and design, and its role in the creative and cultural industries that enrich their lives.

Art and design, personal development and Every Child Matters
Personal development is a vital part of the key stage 3 curriculum and art and design has a distinctive contribution to make in this area. The art and design programme of study provides opportunities to plan sequences of work, learning outcomes and teaching approaches that support personal development through the five Every Child Matters outcomes.
Art and design and personal, learning and thinking skills
The aims of the curriculum are that young people should become successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens. The development of personal, learning and thinking skills (PLTS) is an essential part of meeting these aims. PLTS have considerable impact on young people's ability to enter work and adult life as confident and capable individuals who can make a positive contribution.
The art and design programme of study provides opportunities to plan sequences of work, learning outcomes and teaching approaches to ensure that PLTS form an integral part of subject teaching and learning.
